Anode Rod:
The anode rod is usually an magnesium or aluminium rod placed in gas water heater tanks to protect from tanks corroding. Often called a “sacrificial anode” since it dissolves slowly but sacrifices itself to protect the tanks. The anode rod reacts with substances in water and chemically reacts with it to attract corrosion to itself rather than the tank.
